The Medicare Prescription Drug Program

Although the Medicare Prescription Drug Program ("Medicare Part D") is prescription insurance, the Florida Discount Drug Card may be used with many Part D plans for drugs that are purchased "out-of-pocket," also known as drugs purchased in the "doughnut hole" or "coverage gap."

If you have prescription drug insurance through a Medicare Part D plan, you should check with your Part D plan administrator and/or your pharmacist to determine if the Florida Discount Drug Card discount can be applied to your out-of-pocket drug purchases during your plan's coverage gap.

It is very important that persons who are eligible for Medicare thoroughly investigate their options. If you need help to analyze your coverage needs and determine a plan that best suits you, both Medicare and the Florida Department of Elder Affairs SHINE program provide individual assistance (see contact information below).

SHINE: 1-800-96-ELDER (1-800-963-5337) or www.FloridaShine.org
Medicare: 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) TTY: 1-877-486-2048 or www.medicare.gov

If, after evaluating all of your options under the Medicare prescription drug program, you determine that you will not enroll in a Part D drug plan, the Florida Discount Drug Card provides an alternative way to save money on your prescription medications.

For more information about Medicare, call 1-800-MEDICARE or visit www.medicare.gov.

If, after evaluating all of your options under the Medicare prescription drug program, you determine that you will not enroll in one of the plans, the Florida Discount Drug Card might still be of value to you.
